Nothing beats a good night’s sleep. Yet, it can seem like an elusive myth only a select few get to experience. The rest of us are left with restless nights, midnight insomnia, and alarm-snoozed mornings.

Is it because we’re just destined for poor sleep or is there something missing from the evening routine we all know and love?

Sleep works wonders for the mind and body. From a beauty boost and added energy to healthier digestion and much less stress, optimal sleep levels should be something we’re all searching for. But how exactly do we get it?

Let’s take a look.

Put The Prep Work In

A good night’s sleep doesn’t just happen. It’s often the result of the right amount of prep work put in before getting into bed.

If you find yourself falling into bed at the end of a manic Monday, there’s your problem. It’s not just about getting into bed and hoping for the best. It starts hours before.

Both the mind and body ought to be relaxed before you shut your eyes. This is why night-time routines tend to work so well. But don’t feel the pressure to follow a pre-determined plan that works for someone else. Instead, hand-pick a few points and test them out.

Dim the lighting a little. Stay off of your devices. Meditate. Run a bath. Read a book. Trial a few ideas to see what makes you feel more relaxed an hour or so before bed.

Relax & Unwind

Stress and sleep aren’t exactly besties. One will often stop the other from happening and vice versa. And as much as we can’t always be stress-free, aiming to be more serene in the evenings will help.

So at some point, you have to stop. Stop trying to be productive. Stop focusing on work. And just stop the worrying or overthinking.

Pause for a second. Allow yourself to relax and really unwind. And if you know that you’re utterly useless at doing this, work with a calming aid.

Apps like Headspace can be perfect to still the mind and allow you to relax. Aromatherapy oils like lavender and ylang-ylang are often loved for their soothing properties. Even bringing in a white noise machine (aff) could be what it takes to keep you centred.

Enjoy Being In Bed

It’s a dream getting into freshly washed sheets, isn’t it? Is there anything better than a cosy bed and enjoying that ahh feeling as soon as you sink in?

Well, maybe! Because none of that really matters if your bedding itself isn’t incredible. To get a good night’s sleep, it helps to love being in bed. Beautifully soft and comforting sheets, squishy and sumptuous hotel quality duvets, and perfectly fluffed pillows are perfection. So is it time you made a change to yours?

You have to feel comfortable. Irritating materials, poorly stuffed pillows and a limp duvet just won’t do. Nor will leaving it too long between washes. When your bedding is fit for a queen, you know quality sleep is coming!

Get Comfortable

But what happens when you’ve already invested in sensational sheets and you still can’t sleep? Maybe the real issue is the best itself and, more specifically, the mattress.

Many a bad night’s sleep can be attributed to a really awful mattress. Whether it’s brand new or not, it could be that your mattress type is completely wrong.

How you lie and your sleep posture dramatically affects your quality of sleep. And if your chosen mattress isn’t supporting you, you could have a problem. This is why you should consider purchasing a new mattress and look for more information on which one would be right for you, depending on your preferences. to ensure you can get a good night sleep.

Side sleepers, you might want to opt for a softer mattress to cushion your curves as you cuddle up. But for back sleepers, a much firmer mattress might be needed to keep you comfortable.

Protect Your Environment

When you know you’re nailing the first four points, getting this far might be frustrating. But if your night time routine is flawless, you love to relax and you’re sleep setup is second to none, it’s time to turn to your environment.

Your sleeping environment is sacred. And it needs to be treated as such. So any sort of noise or light could be seriously sabotaging your chances of a good night’s sleep.

For noise you can’t control, there’s the white noise machine (aff). Good windows and heavy curtains can also help to block out anything external. For any type of light, blackout blinds are a must. Then, of course, there’s always a sleep mask and earbuds to consider too.

It’s never a walk in the park when you’re surviving on shocking levels of sleep. But even the worst of worrisome sleepers will find some kind of comfort by working in these steps.
