Tired of your cluttered closet? In desperate need of a wardrobe refresh? Here’s how to slim down your style.
What’s a girl to do when her wardrobe’s gone wild? Whether you’re an avid clothing collector or you’ve never thrown a thing away, it might be time to slim down your style.
Over the years, it’s easy to find yourself the proud owner of way too much clutter. From shoes you’ve not seen in years to tops that still have the tags on, it might be time for a full closet clear-out and the creation of a capsule wardrobe. Here’s how to do it.
1. Start Off Simple
It’s okay to start off small. In fact, you should make it a priority. If you try to tackle too much at once, you might get overwhelmed and give up entirely.
When you want to slim down your style, focus on the things that you never wear! There will be pieces in your closet that you’ve not worn in months. Or even years. So, start a pile of what you know you’ll never wear again ready to donate to charity (or throw out if they’re way too tatty).
2. Switch Out The Seasons
Clothes can be seasonal, you know that, so now it’s time for another quick win. When you want to declutter your closet, take out everything seasonal that you’re not wearing right now.
Whether it’s cashmere and coats or swimwear and strappy dresses, make sure you’re only dealing with items you need now. If you can, swap the pieces out and put them into storage.
3. Reconsider Trend Pieces
Trends are delightful, aren’t they? But you’re not required to follow them. Especially if you know that, deep down, the just don’t suit your personal style.
So, when it comes to cutting down the clothes in your closet, attack the trendy pieces first. As you pick up each item, ask yourself – do you really love it? Will it stand the test of time? Did you buy it because it’s fashionable or does it actually suit you. And, finally, is it really your style? If not, it’s got to go!
4. Try Everything Else On
Now, as you start to slim down your style, you’re going to want to try everything on. Because at this point, you’re going to have a lot left – and you might not want to keep it all.
If you’re trying to bring your personal style alive and create a capsule collection, then you need to be picky. Have a big try-on party for one. Grab a drink, pop some popcorn, play a little music and have fun. But be brutal – you can’t keep it all.
5. Focus On What Feels Good
A wardrobe purge is hard work. How do you know what to keep? What to lose? How you’re going to feel about each piece in six months’ time? Well, you can’t know. All you can do is focus on what feels good.
So, as you try things on, focus on how you’re feeling. Anything you’re not sure on or have doubts about, can go. But when you put something on that you love or feel really fantastic in, you definitely need to keep it!
6. Create A Capsule Collection
And now, the final step to slimming down your style is to create the capsule wardrobe of your dreams. Really think about the pieces in your closet that work well together. The shirts and skirts and dresses and shoes that you know you can mix and match.
Ideally, you’re going to want a collection of staple, go-to pieces you can reach for time and time again and never tire of. After all, it’s amazing to not have to overthink what you’ll wear every morning.
