It’s probably fair to say that everyone is aware of the phenomenon of vicious circles, and positive spirals.

One day, you wake up on the wrong side of the bed, and then you miss a deadline at work, and then you have an argument with your partner, and before you know it things are going from bad to worse.

Or, on a more positive note, maybe you begin a new fitness routine, and you feel motivated to fix your sleep cycles, and you have more energy, and things seem to keep improving.

In life, it’s often very important to find ways to avoid falling into a negative rut, and to be on guard against the situations that can lead you in that direction.

Here are a few tips that might help you.

Maintain regular in-person contact with other people

As human beings, we are all naturally social creatures, and this is part of the reason why things like live in care programs for the elderly may be appealing.

No matter how old you are, and no matter what situation you’re in, maintaining regular in-person contact with other people can serve a vitally important role in safeguarding your sense of well-being, and giving you a sense of perspective on the world at large.

Of course, you should be selective about the kind of people you surround yourself with, as well.

Get into the present moment and engage with the world, rather than getting too caught up in your own thoughts

One of the ways that negative spirals and vicious cycles occur, is via the tendency of negative thoughts to lead to more negative thoughts, and of individuals to get caught up in their own ruminations when negative situations develop.

Unfortunately, it’s very difficult – if not impossible – to actually escape a negative situation purely by trying to think things through obsessively, even though challenging your negative thoughts may be helpful.

At some point, it’s necessary to get back into the present moment, and to engage with the world in a hands-on way, instead.

Physical activity, and getting out of the house even if you don’t feel like it, can be very helpful with regards to getting you out of your own head.

Maintain certain daily routines and habits that help to keep you properly balanced

To a significant degree, the amount of well-being and balance we experience in everyday life is frequently intimately connected to certain key routines and habits of ours.

If you have a routine that involves waking up at a reasonable hour every day, and getting enough sleep each night, this is likely to work wonders in terms of safeguarding your sense of well-being and keeping you balanced.

If, on the other hand, you start going to sleep and waking up at random times of the day and night, things can very quickly unravel.

Be mindful of maintaining the daily routines and habits that help to keep you properly balanced.
