We’ve got a lot to thank Gen Z for. Known for their strong social conscience and commitment to making the world a better place, all of us are learning a lot from them. Whether they’re challenging systemic injustices, advocating for equality and inclusivity, or choosing to go childless, Gen Z is determined to cancel outdated norms and push for autonomy and progress. We applaud their bravado. Here are 20 social issues that Gen Z is determined to cancel.
Racial Injustice
We’ve watched as ethnic minorities have been treated unfairly for too many years, but Gen Z is determined to cancel systemic racism and fight for racial equality in all aspects of society. They advocate for dismantling racist systems and policies and promote anti-racist education and awareness.
9 to 5
We’ve been slaves to set working hours for longer than we can remember and vastly sacrificing a healthy work-life balance. It’s all changing as Gen Z believes that work and well-being should be one and the same. Rigid hours are diminishing in favor of flexible working patterns, shorter working weeks, and remote working options.
Gender Inequality
Gen Z has had enough of women being underpaid and undervalued, and they’ve embraced the notion of women being regarded as equal to men. They boldly fight for gender equality within the workplace, education, and unfair media representations of women, and choose to challenge the matriarchy platform. We’re starting to see some real changes with the likes of groundbreaking movements that have firmly put women on the map.
Dressing Up
We’ve always followed a social code for the clothes that we wear, and society has dictated that we dress smartly for work and play. Gen Z is all about comfort over vanity. They believe that comfort in the workplace is akin to productivity and creativity, and social activities are about kicking back in sneakers and jeans. We’re loving this new attitude which means we don’t have to adhere to rigid dress codes.
Mortgages
Most of us were raised to believe that we leave college, get a job, and buy a house. It's a lot of pressure and solely based on social norms. Gen Z is rejecting the notion of being a homeowner, particularly due to the vast increase in house prices. They’re living for the moment and choosing to live freely and flexibly. Life’s too short to get tied into mortgages.
Employment
here’s always going to be a place for employment within an organization, but Gen Z is moving into the freelancing domain to embrace the creativity and flexibility it brings them. They refuse to be slaves to the system and would rather make an honest cent than work under someone else’s set of rules. They’re boldly carving their futures and following their dreams.
Reducing Emissions
We’ve been hearing the rumors of electric cars for decades, but it’s Gen Z that has brought the concept to the fore. Manual cars are fading out as they’re replaced with electric or automatic cars that reduce harmful emissions. They’re also more cost-effective and look pretty cool.
Eating Meat
Never have we seen such a rise in Vegan food choices, and it’s thanks to Gen Z for making the healthy decision to go meatless. Gone are the days of having to choose from one or two sub-standard non-meat options, we’re now able to dine out and buy a wide range of groceries that taste delicious. It’s a great time to be a non-meat eater.
Paper Documents
The advancement of technology has shifted many of us to paperless documents, and Gen Z is a forerunner in embracing digital documents over paper ones. You no longer need a filing cabinet when you’ve got it all on your handheld device. It took some getting used to for older generations, but we’re reaping the benefits of a more efficient system.
Climate Change Denial
We’re all guilty of letting our environmental contributions fall by the wayside. Thankfully, Gen Z recognizes the urgency of addressing climate change and fights to cancel climate change denial. They advocate for environmental conservation, renewable energy, and sustainable practices to reduce the dangerous impacts of climate change.
Plastic
If you’ve noticed that your favorite products have switched to paper-based packaging over plastic, you’ve got Gen Z to thank. They’re one of the most eco-conscious generations of all time and choose natural products like bamboo and wood over single-use plastics. Landfill will be thankful for it if no one else is.
Studying
It would be sinful to undervalue the benefits of study, it paves the way for professionals, experts, and pioneers. Many Gen-Z’s are opting out of a college degree, however, in favor of apprenticeships, trade schools, and entrepreneurial conquests. Student loans alone are a big enough deterrent.
Digital Payments
When was the last time you even visited a bank? Gen Z has embraced all that technology has to offer and chooses to handle their finances from their smartphone. It’s less time-consuming and we’re able to manage our finances from anywhere in the world. How times have changed?
LGBTQ+ Discrimination
Long have LGBTQ+ groups been sidelined for their diversity, and they’ve faced suppression at the hands of toxic social norms. Gen Z is dedicated to canceling discrimination and prejudice against the LGBTQ+ community, and they’ve singlehandedly ensured that LGBTQ+ communities have inclusivity in workplaces, society, and media representations.
Smoking
ey might be a generation of vapers but when it comes to smoking cigarettes, they’re far too health-conscious. They value their health and well-being more than generations that preceded them and champion clean air and smoke-free policies.
Mental Health Stigma
Gen Z is committed to canceling the stigma surrounding mental health issues and promoting open conversations about mental wellness. Their refreshing openness on the topic has brought a vast change to society where individuals are being encouraged to speak up about their battles with mental illness. We’re blessed to have so many modern support systems in place.
Body Shaming
Body shaming is rapidly becoming a thing of the past as Gen Z embraces body positivity and self-love. They continue to challenge unrealistic beauty standards that have been forced upon us, and we’re seeing more representations of varied body shapes that represent real people.
Starting A Family
It’s always been considered the norm to start a family of your own, and while choosing to opt out of parenting is no new concept, Gen Zs are largely embracing child-free futures. There’s always the chance that they’ll change their minds down the line, but to consider the responsibilities that come with parenting at such a young age shows grounded future thinking. We applaud them for their autonomy and non-compromising attitudes.
