Summer Fashion -- What's Hot?

Embrace your inner minx! Hipster girls go whimsically chic; with floppy beach hats, bold flowing blouses, and of course, this summer's newest addition; the long lost high-waist short.

That's right ladies, this summer it's all about vintage fashion – on the lighter side of course. Time to dip into your mother's most prized possessions once again, because the vintage soul in all of us will be itching to get out! Establishing that effortless vintage style in the warmer months can often require a bit of a delicate effort, especially in attempts to pull this off without looking as though you're still stuck in the winter seasons. But need not fret, because I'm going to show you how to execute that oh-so desirable, just thrown-together, hobo chic look, with a splash of flirtatious summery color to keep you ahead of the curve; and more importantly, still accommodating the weather.

When we think summer fashion, we often think light, flirty, and popping vivacious colors. This can sometimes be difficult to achieve if you tend to go for those fabulous vintage duds; equipped with heavily woven fabrics, dark moody colors, and various eclectic layers. But with a few eccentric pieces, and this season's newest addition, the tailored high-rise short, you'll be a fashionable balance of chic style, while still maintaining those summer-simpatico threads to stay comfortable in the heat.

In order to achieve this balance, where better to begin than with a fabulous, swanky little pair of short shorts! And fortunately for all of you starving fashion junkies, it’s the year of the stone cold fox. Which means it’s time to practice your too-hot-to-trot strut and click those heals along the asphalt, because I want YOU to wear those legs as an accessory! Yes girls, the time has come to throw out those old low-rise jeans of yours, and I don’t want to see any shedding of tears, because it’s time to fully embrace the high-rise.

Now don’t be apprehensive about going bold with these shorts. Despite your doubts about pulling off a high-waisted pant, I can assure you they are quite flattering to the female figure, and it’s actually an attractive way to make the most of an hourglass figure. My favorite way to sport these foxy little numbers is with a printed or semi-sheer blouse, loosely fitted with a bit of extra flowing fabric for texture and movement. This combination will add an element of chic, flirtatious, and effortless girly style; which will keep you looking hot, while staying gracefully cool.

When shopping for a blouse similar to this, I would recommend to first keep an eye out for prints and texture. Remember to keep the colors light to compliment the season, but to also not be afraid of a bold print, or nonconventional shape and fit. It’s important to keep in mind that the shorts are tailored and fitted, so don’t be afraid to venture daringly outside of the box with a wild, whimsical blouse to offer some contrast.

I would encourage you to embrace your inner creativity with an outfit like this as well. Mixing and matching will be fun here, as it will be difficult to make any mistakes with such an endless array of combinations. Try pairing a bright, color-saturated short, with a light pastel blouse, accenting a fun print of your choice. This can also look hot with a white, or light shade of shorts, and a color forward blouse.

Heels are an essential part of an outfit like this as well, and my motto has often been: the more obnoxious the heel, the better. With that said, I personally enjoy a metallic shoe with – well, just about anything. And I’m all about mixing this outfit up with a brassy metallic platform to compliment those beautiful bronze legs! Now I know what you’re probably thinking, but don’t go getting your feathers in a ruffle because I have yet to suggest practical shoes. I’m still looking out for all of you modestly dressed girls with your understated fabulousness. For those of you who would prefer to keep it casual and comfortable, this outfit can also be worn with a pair of beachy, strappy sandals. Or even better, a chunky peep-toe wedge.

Now for the fun part; time to accessorize! Yes indeed, accessories are a must with attire of this cast. And fortunately for us, the oversized floppy sun hat is making a vigorous comeback this season. A fun a hat like this will go smashingly well with an oversized pair of shades, a few long, draping chains with bold audacious charm combinations, and your mother’s old canvas bag from 1974.

So now that you are sporting the appropriate attire, grab your girlfriends for an extended trip to the beach! And don’t forget those fabulous old Ray Bans you wouldn’t dare tell your father you had borrowed, because we plan on knocking ‘em dead this summer. This fun and funky summer look is guaranteed to bring those drably-dressed beach bums to a halt.
